Visual Schema is a solo exhibit in CAMIBAart’s Salon Gallery featuring the most recent works by Houston based artist Matthew Gantt.

Gantt has a signature process that seems to be equal parts drawing, painting, visioning, and ritual.  With this body of work, he dives deep to create for us a new army of archetypal characters from his unconscious world.

Explained most simply, Gantt renders mythopoeic images from his unconscious by ceremoniously throwing ink onto folded paper, which he then blots.  He repeats this process until he spontaneously sees an “image” (similar to seeing something in the Rorschach Test ink blot).  He then works to carefully render the image so that others can see what he saw in the chaos.  What began as blotted ink ends up as fully developed dreamlike characters with stories steeped in the artist’s psyche.  In many of the newest works of this exhibit, Gantt has restrained his need to render the entire image and thereby selectively exposes the thrown and blotted ink. The resulting artworks succeed in revealing the complicated process more clearly than ever before.

Matthew Gantt is a graduate of the Seattle Film Institute and a visual artist who has worked in various mediums ranging from sculpture, to film, to ink drawing.
