CAMIBAart Gallery is honored to present Misha Penton: Transparent Vulnerability – a watercolor and audio environment. This installation of artworks is best described in the artist’s own words:
Pigment and water flow across lightly textured and delicate paper leaving gentle traces and delightfully patterns. A spray of color: a fleeting thought, a passing moment. The watercolors echo the ephemeral and transparent quality of my voice work: expressing something evanescent and not-quite-able-to-be-expressed in words.
I’m as enamored with the metal substrate that holds the paper as I am with the watercolors themselves. The rigid, nearly permanent quality of the galvanized steel sharply contrasts the ephemerality of the paper works— similarly, the recorded sound world provides a “permanent” place for the embodied voice to reside.
The works now come to fruition as intimate and transient moments within a larger environment where they coexist with the sound of breath, whispered fragments of poetry, and tones of voice.
Misha Penton is a painter, sound artist, contemporary classical singer, and writer. She holds a BA in Music from Skidmore College and a MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. Misha’s visual works have been shown throughout the Southeast and her large-scale work “untitled 2” was included as a winner of Lawndale Art Center’s 2004 The Big Show. This is the first exhibition of Misha’s watercolor works.
Misha is one of Houston Press’ 100 Creatives of 2011, and is named a 2012 finalist for Best Artistic Director by the Houston Press Theater Awards for her work as founder and artistic director of Divergence Vocal Theater. Her professional performance affiliations include Houston Grand Opera; The Foundation for Modern Music (Houston), The Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Dallas Museum of Art; The University of Houston Center for Creative Work; Sam Houston State University School of Music; and The Rothko Chapel Houston.
