Winston’s Lee Mascarenhas transforms the sounds and rhythms of music and dance into layered paintings with a balanced palette that is both bold and soft. Known for his masterfully composed encaustic bas-relief artworks, Winston’s new painting ventures continue his use of emotive mark making. A restless innovator and explorer of texture, color, and space; Winston’s ongoing experimentation continues to generate eloquently refined visual artworks. CAMIBAart is proud to be the first stateside exhibit of artworks from Winston Lee Mascarenhas’s thesis exhibit at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland.
My MUSIC, My HEARBEAT, My MARK is inspired by the Minimal Classical Period’s musical compositions and their way of building up a rhythm through the addition of notes in successive repetitions. Also of influence is the rhythm of life – carrying through from his previous career in anesthesiology, this rhythm is visually manifest as an expression of the ever present and constant human heartbeat. Admiring this exhibit, one gets lost in the layers of pounding beats bursting out of these measured paintings.
In His Own Words: “We all carry within our heads/brains invisible frames of reference that filter our experience and shape the way we see the world around us. Those frames are the product of many things – our cultural experience, our education, our assumptions, our relationships, and our innate biology. My frames are centered by the senses, and the paintings have become the physical manifestations or examinations of these senses; listening, sighting, in addition to my sense of the specific human condition weighing in on my mind at the time. Multi referenced and influenced, irrational at times, I have allowed the physicality of painting to manifest its gestures, its mark making, its scarring, its rhythms, its Beats!”
About the Artist: Winston’s parents relocated to the United States from Brazil in search of medical education opportunities, settling in Laredo Texas where Winston was born. Graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a major in Biology, he continued his education and received his Medical Doctorate from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio Texas in 1979. Winston’s most recent educational achievement is his Masters of Letters in Fine Art Practice from the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland in 2016. The 2014 Grand Award winner of the Hunting Art Prize, Winston’s artworks are also included in publications such as Texas Abstract by Jim Edward and Cold Wax Medium by R. Crowell and J McLaughlin. Today his works are featured in multiple public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Brooklyn Art Library.
