CAMIBAart is excited to present Edward Lane McCartney’s second solo exhibit with the gallery: Holding Patterns. Following a 2016 adventure with a Hopi pottery collector through the Southwest, McCartney returned to his studio inspired to explore the concepts of landscape and topography. Spanning two years and dealing with these concepts, the works in this exhibit fall into four main series: Typecast, Canyon Suite, Arabesques, Formations.
Much like the Hopi, McCartney has used materials readily found in his surroundings to create his Typecast series; wall-works derived from both pottery patterns and that are aerial landscapes reminiscent of patterns seen from an airplane window as you circle in a holding pattern waiting to land. The Canyon Suite artworks are more literal abstractions of landscapes as textures, shapes, and earthen hues. With his previously established Arabesques series, he continues to explore color and shape with a nod to Moorish design and ornament but informed by this most recent travel through the Southwest.
In the Formations series, Edward Lane McCartney uses his background in metalsmithing to create wearable art inspired by and referencing the landscape and topography of his recent travels through the American Southwest. Using precious metals and gemstones, he translates these ideas of landscape, topography, texture, and pattern into wearable rings, cufflinks, bracelets, and earrings.
Finally, the crown jewel of the exhibit is the very personal Box #8, Self Portrait, a continuation of his ongoing series of annual portrait boxes. This reliquary references his arrival to Houston from London in 1977.
In his own words:
The language of pattern is enduring. From petro-glyphs, the Nazca Lines, the Hopi pot, to an Irish knit sweater, a kente cloth, to a modern tattoo, along with patterns of day to day living, this language, its communication, and its patterns, while ever transmuting and creating new meanings, are holding.
About the Artist:
For over 17 years Edward Lane McCartney has created and presented his art at over 90 exhibits in 24 cities throughout 13 states, including: Oakland, CA; St. Petersburg, FL; Brockton, MA; Mexico City, MX; New York, NY; Memphis, TN; and Seattle, WA. His background in design and metalsmithing are visible in his fearless use of a variety of materials and his fine execution details. In his art, he explores a wide range of themes from social issues, to historical references, to purely aesthetic concepts. He currently lives and works in Houston, Texas.
