Presenting Translations, an exhibit of recent artworks by Winston Lee Mascarenhas. As always, he delivers works that are process driven, carefully crafted, and constructed of layer upon layer of materials. Both on the macro and the micro scale, these works employ Winston’s signature mark-making aesthetic, creating moody and textural three-dimensional abstract paintings. He uses color to grab our attention and bring us in closer, allowing us to more deeply appreciate the detail.

In his own words:
Over the course of the last year, in the development of this most recent body of work, I have been preoccupied with the notion of reinvention, counter intuitive thinking, and turning things upside down - in other words translating my approach to art making. Not necessarily abandoning previous methods and bodies of work, but shaking up my approach to presenting my main influences: music and the vibrancy and rhythms of life.
In a brief commentary, Gaudi reinvented architecture. He literally turned it upside down and got rid of the right angles. He didn’t like to draw, so he laid out literally thousands of tiny sand bags on the floors and then turned them upside down, suspended them, and then photographed them with a reverse mirror. He used this approach to design his buildings – models of which reside in the basement of the Sagrada Familia. Gaudi’s approach trigged my thinking to take my art practice and turn it upside down, i.e. rethink and translate.
In the Translations series I’ve started by first creating mostly two dimensional artworks, many of which are encaustic monotypes on various papers including musical scores, previous works on paper, canvas, and even India Ink commentary and drawings on the pages of the 2009 Art Basel catalogue. These are strong works that can stand on their own, but then, in an act of reinvention, I cut them up. Finally, through assemblage and further painting with wax, oil, and pigments, I create mostly three-dimensional translations of the originals.
I invite the viewer of these works to observe, to contemplate, and be brave in their observations, visually articulating their own iteration or Translation.
About the Artist:
Born in Laredo Texas and currently a resident of Dallas, Winston Lee Mascarenhas has won multiple awards for his artwork, most notably the 2014 Hunting Art Prize. His works can be found in numerous corporate and museum collections, including in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Royal Collection at Dumfries House in Scotland, and Brooklyn Art Library in Brooklyn New York. With a MLitt in Fine Art Practice from Glasgow School of Art, Winston has also participated in nine prestigious residencies, most recently the Invitational Collaborative Residency with M. David Studio in Bushwick New York. Translations is Winston Lee Mascarenhas’ second solo exhibit with CAMIBAart Gallery.
