Artist's Statement

Painting and making art is a meditative activity for me. Some of these repetitive painting processes include dripping, blowing, layering and piling. Many pieces combine all of these techniques. Playing with paint and other materials is more interesting to me than creating images. My recent paintings and installations continue my exploration of materials, shapes and painting processes. Paint drops stack up and form complex piles and rhythms. These pieces are a new and strange form of abstract pointillism. The strangeness and density of the stacked dots intentionally draw in the viewer.

Abbreviated Bio

Charlotte received her MFA from the University of North Texas in 1999 and has since pursued an art practice best defined as an exploration into pure abstraction. Building her paintings with layers of carefully placed drips, drops and brush strokes, she has established a signature aesthetic all the while continuing to create fresh works that push boundaries.

Charlotte Smith has had thirty solo exhibitions and has been selected for more than twenty juried exhibitions, often receiving awards. Smith has been included in the following publications: Global Corporate Collections (2015), Texas Abstract (2014), The State of the Art: Contemporary Artists in Texas (2012), and Texas Artists Today (2010). Her work can be found in the collections of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, the Museum of Southeast Texas, the South Texas Institute for the Arts, Kendra Scott corporate collection (at corporate headquarters and stores in Austin & New Orleans), Neiman Marcus (stores nationwide), as well as many additional significant collections, both private and corporate, throughout the country.
